Uzbek music live: Malika Ziyaeva’s
program
A lecture/concert
with the participation of Dr. Tanya Merchant
Renowned Uzbek
dutarist (a dutar player) Malika Ziyaeva will perform traditional and folk
music from the region including selections from maqom repertoires that date
back to the 15th century courts in Silk Road cities such as Bukhara,
Samarqand, Andijon, and Qoqand. Her program will include performance of
historical maqom and other traditional pieces, as well as more recent folk and
composed pieces.
Ziyaeva was the
first female instrumentalist to join the prestigious maqom ensemble of the
Uzbek state radio station. She teaches dutar (a two-stringed lute) at the Uzbek
State Conservatory of Music and has toured Europe and the former Soviet Union
extensively with outstanding vocalist Munojat Yulchiyeva and performed at a
variety of world music festivals in Western Europe. She is also featured on
many albums of traditional Uzbek music, and was granted the title "Honored
Artist of Uzbekistan" in 2002. This will be her first visit to the United
States.
Ziyaeva's
student, Dr. Tanya Merchant (of the University of California, Santa Cruz), will
be on hand to provide percussion accompaniment on the frame drum (doyra) and
will provide a short introductory lecture contextualizing this music and its
history.
The event will take place at SRH on Sunday June
1st, at 1-3pm.
