Spots are still available for the free meditation retreat and pilgrimage in Korea sponsored by the Institute for the Study of the Jogye Order and the International Meditation Center at Dongguk University. Retreatants are also welcome to attend the international conference on Ganhwa Seon (kanhwa Sŏn 看話禪, the “Zen of investigating meditative topics,” or “questioning meditation”) that precedes the retreat.

           Arrive in Seoul, June 22, 2016; Return to Seoul on June 30, 2016
1) Ganhwa Seon Retreat, guided by Seon Master Subul Seunim, the abbot of Pŏmŏsa and director of Dongguk University’s International Seon Center
Date: June 24–29, 2016
Place: Baekdamsa, a traditional Korean monastery deep in the mountains of the Gangwondo region of Korea.
Participants:  Professors, lecturers, and Ph. D students in Buddhist Studies; professional meditation teachers and advanced meditation students in Buddhist and other religious traditions. The coordinating committee will select a maximum of 30 participants from among the applicants for the retreat. Retreatants will be provided with hotel accommodations in Seoul on June 23rd and on June 30th, with shared lodging. In-country expenses, including accommodations, domestic transportation between Seoul and Baekdamsa and return, and room and board during the retreat and the following pilgrimage will be provided; airfare to Korea is the responsibility of the retreatant.  During the retreat, 2-3 retreatants will share a room at the monastery, sleeping on traditional floor mats.  Simple, and sometimes relatively spicy, Korean vegetarian food will be served at the monastery; the refectory is unable to accommodate special dietary requests. There are separate shower rooms for men and women.  All other expenses, personal or otherwise, are the responsibility of the participants.
2) Pilgrimage to Traditional Ganhwa Seon Centers
Date: June 29–30, 2016
Places to be visited:  Bongamsa (discussion with Seon master Jeongmyong Seunim) & Beomeosa (discussion with Seon master Jiyu Seunim).
Participants:  All retreatants
Accommodation: all transportation to these monasteries and return to Seoul on June 30th will be provided, along with room and board in shared accommodations during the pilgrimage and on the return date in Seoul.
Transportation from Incheon airport to your Seoul hotel and return is the responsibility of the participants.
