functions of the Kanseki Repository"
Place: Institute for Research in Humanities, Kyoto University: Main

research group "Fundamental topics in Digital Humanities" at the
Institute for Research in Humanities, Kyoto University, coordinated by
Christian Wittern. It features a large compilation of premodern
Chinese texts collected and curated using firm philological principles
based on more than 20 years of experience with digital texts. Among
its unique features is the fact that the texts can be accessed,
edited, annotated and shared not only through a website, but also
through a specialized text editor, which thus morphes into a powerful
workspace for reading, research and translation of Chinese texts.
The Kanseki Repository includes all texts in the
Daozang and Daozang
jiyao and a large collection of Buddhist material, including all texts
created by the CBETA team, where applicable enhanced through the
inclusion of recensions from the Tripitaka Koreana.

This lecture will mark the first public release
of the Kanseki
Repository and will provide some background on the methodological
principles that informed the design, the contents and some use cases
of the repository. Those who bring a laptop with access to the
Internet will be able to set it up for using the Repository right
away. The lecture will be held in Japanese, but supporting material is
also available in English.

Bodhisattva Path of Unsurpassed Enlightenment: A Complete Translation of
the Bodhisattvabhumi

The Bodhisattvabhūmi is the Mahāyāna tradition’s most comprehensive manual on the practice and training of bodhisattvas—by the author’s own account, a compilation of the full range of instructions contained in the entire collection of Mahāyāna sutras. A classic work of the Yogācāra school, it has been cherished in Tibet by all the historical Buddhist lineages as a primary source of instruction on bodhisattva ethics, vows, and practices, as well as for its summary of the ultimate goal of the bodhisattva path—supreme enlightenment. Despite the text’s seminal importance in the Tibetan traditions, it has remained unavailable in English except in fragments. Engle’s translation, made from the Sanskrit original with reference to the Tibetan translation and commentaries, will enable English readers to understand more fully and clearly what it means to be a bodhisattva and practitioner of the Mahāyāna tradition.
