Speaking at Asia Society in New York last week, former Taiwanese President Ma Ying-jeou said that to maintain peace across the Taiwan Strait, “we should let the young people of the two sides get to know each other — as soon and as many as possible.” Ma added that Taiwan’s democracy may be having an endearing influence on young mainlanders, and said that during his re-election campaign of 2012 he was “astonished” by how much it was discussed on the mainland’s internet.
