New Books and Resources from Shambhala Publications

by Nikko Odiseos
Dear Friends,

I wanted to share a few items that will be of interest to many on this list: a video lecture series, new books, a new website, and the Snow Lion newsletter archive.
LECTURE SERIES
The first is a series of lectures, sponsred by the Tsadra oundation at our event space/studio on Asanga’s Bodhisattvabhumi given by Artemus Engle, translator of this text is available online.

NEW BOOKS
The following are  some of the new books that have come out in the last couple months.
The Art of Awakening: A User’s Guide to Tibetan Buddhist Art and Practice is a systematic treatment of Tibetan arts seen through the eyes of one of its leading practitioners, Konchog Lhadrepa and Charlotte Davis of Shechen Monastery.

The Wisdom Chapter: Jamgön Mipham’s Commentary on the Ninth Chapter of The Way of the Bodhisattva.  This work includes Mipham’s famous commentary as well as the exchange between him and Drakar Tulku, one of his critics.
Translated by the Padmakara Translation Group.

The Just King: The Tibetan Buddhist Classic on Leading an Ethical Life
By Jamgon Miphan, translated and introduced by Jose Cabezon.
The nineteenth-century Buddhist monk and luminary Jamgön Mipham’s letter to the king of Dergé, whose small kingdom straddled China and Tibet during a particularly turbulent period, is similar in the universality of its message. This work, however, is unique in that it stresses compassion, impartiality, self-control, and virtue as essential for long-lasting success—whether as a leader or an individual trying to live a meaningful life. Mipham’s historic contribution to ethics and governance, until now little studied outside of Buddhist circles, teaches us the importance of protecting life, implementing fair taxation, supporting environmental sustainability, aiding the poor, and safeguarding freedom of religion. Both present-day leaders and those they lead will find this classic work, finally available in English, profoundly illuminating on political, societal, and personal levels.

Enlightened Vagabond: The Life and Teachings of Patrul Rinpoche
The stories contained herein were collected by Matthieu Ricard over the last 40 years.  It represents the oral tradition of Patrul Rinpoche and his teaching style as passed down by the holders of his tradition.  Its hard to imagine assigning a book more  fun than this to a class of undergraduates.

We have the second and third volumes of Jeffrey Hopkins’ translations of Tsongkhapa’s  The Great Exposition of Secret Mantra.  This includes commentary by the Dalai Lama.  This dovetails (though there is a gap) with Columbia's works on this which starts includes some of the later volumes.

These are reissues of Tantra in Tibet, Deity Yoga, and Yoga Tantra respectively.

NEW RESOURCES
Finally we launched a new website last week which, in addition to being loaded with hundreds of articles, videos, interviews and more, all tied together by topics, this will be of interest particularly to Tibetologists and those for whom Tibetan Buddhist in the  west is of interest as it holds a searchable archive of all the articles in the Snow Lion newsletter which was published from the late 1980s until 2012, in some ways documenting the growth of Tibetan Buddhist study and practice here.  The archive is still being cleaned up and polished, but is quite useable now.  Please enjoy.

NEW BOOK> Zen and Material Culture, ed. Pamela D. Winfield and Steven Heine (Oxford University Press, 2017)

by Pamela D. Winfield
Dear Colleagues (with apologies for cross-posting)
I am pleased to announce the publication of my co-edited volume with Steven Heine entitled Zen and Material Culture (Oxford University Press, 2017).
https://global.oup.com/academic/product/zen-and-material-culture-9780190469306?lang=en&cc=us
It is currently available as an ebook, and its paperback and hardcover versions will be available in print next month. There will also be a special joint lecture and book signing hosted by The Japan Society in New York on October 18th, 2017. Details to be announced.

Expanding on previous studies of Zen art history, material culture, and religious practice, Zen and Material Culture broadens the study of Japanese Zen Buddhism to include material inquiry as an important complement to mainly textual, institutional, or ritual studies. This groundbreaking volume is an invaluable resource for anyone whose interests lie at the intersection of Zen art, architecture, history, ritual, tea ceremony, women's studies, and the fine line between Buddhist materiality and materialism.
