QUERY> Question about the natural dyes used to dye monastic robes

A chemistry professor is sitting in on my Introduction to Buddhism course
and has the following questions which I could not answer. If anyone can help,
you can reply either on the list or to me personally.
What dyes are used to dye monk’s robes in
Buddhist countries? And from what plants are the dyes extracted? In particular
was the red dye extracted from sappan wood (Caesalpinia sampan) ever used? It
grows in hilly areas in central and southern India, through Burma, Thailand,
Indochina and southern China to Malaysia. In Tamil it is known as sappangu
and in Hindi, patanga, bakam.

QUERY> Meat Eating in Monastic Contexts

Dear Colleagues,I am looking for studies, of any type, that discuss the eating of meat by monastics in the context of sickness. I am aware of the well-known exception that allows monastics to eat meat as long as the animal was not killed expressly for donation. I would be happy to learn of studies that examine this in detail, but I am particularly interested in exceptions dealing directly with sickness. I am drafting an article that examines ethical food choices in relation to medical disabilities.
Additionally, I am looking for studies of meditation practices that involve animals, particularly meditation on dead animal bodies. Such meditation is mentioned, for instance, in the Visuddhimagga, but not elaborated upon there. Buddhaghosa even gives a specific example—Cūḷa Piṇḍapātika Tissa, who meditated on the corpse of an elephant floating in the Kāḷadīghavāpi reservoir—but I have been unable thus far to find the full story. If you know of any source for it, please let me know.
