NEW BOOK> Food of Sinful Demons: Meat, Vegetarianism, and the Limits of Buddhism in Tibet

Dear Colleagues,
It is my pleasure to announce the publication of my book, Food
of Sinful Demons: Meat, Vegetarianism, and the Limits of Buddhism in Tibet
from Columbia University Press.
In this work I trace the history of vegetarianism among
Tibetan Buddhists, noting that religious leaders almost universally viewed meat
as morally problematic. This critique of meat hinged on the
importance Tibetan religious leaders placed on having compassion for animals,
but also intersected with discussions of the monastic code and tantric
samayas. Having examined the arguments used to support vegetarianism, I
ask why, given the widespread religious concern with the morality of meat
eating, vegetarianism never became more common in Tibet. For while it
certain did exist (and was at times locally common), vegetarianism never
became normative among Tibetans, even among the particularly devout. To
address this question, I highlight several Tibetan cultural norms that
militated against vegetarianism, sometimes presenting meat as a necessary evil
and sometimes even seeing it as a positive good. In the end, I argue that
vegetarianism lay at the intersection of multiple, competing strands of Tibetan
culture. Further, this is a competition that continues to play out today,
as can be seen in contemporary arguments over meat that are taking place across
the Tibetan world.

※ Topic: This year’s preferred topic is “Ganhwa
Seon and Contemporary Society.” We will also consider treatments of any aspect
of Ganhwa Seon, including its principles, practices, and comparisons with other
Buddhist traditions or meditative techniques.
※ Submission of proposed title and brief abstract: November 30, 2017※ Deadline for submission of completed paper: February 28, 2018
※ We will accept seven papers for presentation and consideration for the Subul Scholarly Awards.
※ All presenters receive a $2,000 honorarium plus round-trip economy-class airfare, hotel accommodations, and meals.
※ All papers must be written in English and should not have been previously published or accepted for publication.
※ We welcome the participation of advanced Ph.D. students and junior scholars.

※ Venue: Retreat center near Los Angeles, California (USA)
※ Number of participants: 50 people maximum
※ Participants: Professors, scholars, Ph.D.
students and advanced undergraduates, professional meditation teachers, and
serious meditation students in Buddhist or other religious traditions.
※ Fees: Free for professors, scholars, and students enrolled in university.
$400/person for all others. All expenses during the retreat (including lodging
and meals) will be provided.
