Worth Negotiating With North Korea — Even If Pyongyang Cheats
As President
Donald Trump
prepares to meet North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in a possible
summit this spring, skeptics have questioned the wisdom of
negotiating with a regime that has a proven track record of cheating.
But veteran diplomats Robert
Gallucci and Christopher
Hill explain that engagement with Pyongyang is
still justified so long as it reduces the possibility of conflict.
Even still, a summit between Trump and Kim would not come without
enormous risk. One complication is that the American president has
recently reshuffled his national security team, replacing Secretary
of State Rex
Tillerson with CIA Director Mike Pompeo
and appointing John
Bolton as the new national security advisor.
Gallucci, who learned about Bolton's hiring while appearing on the
Asia Society stage last Thursday, referred to the development as
"very bad news" for the United States.
Asia Society's coverage of North Korea continued in Hong Kong this
week with a panel discussion featuring Kevin Rudd
and Daniel
Russel of the Asia Society Policy Institute in
conversation with former South Korea Foreign Minister Yun Byung-se.
The three discussed the potential opportunities and pitfalls of a
Trump/Kim summit as well as the news that Kim paid a surprise visit
to China.
